The MLR Writers’ Network

is an informal collaboration of professionals, committed to maintaining high quality medico-legal reports compliant with the gold standard for this work, the Istanbul Protocol (IP).

The MLR Writers’ Network formally came into being on 19 October 2023 at a conference for medico-legal report (MLR) writers who adhere to the IP standard, whether from the UK or Ireland. Independent MLR writers and members from the six main organisations in the sector from these countries established a planning group and organised the conference, which was held at the Royal College of Physicians, London. Delegates agreed that an educational collaboration would be worthwhile.

We aim to be an inclusive community of practice, for members of constituent organisations and independent IP-related medico-legal reports writers alike. Our goal is to share good practice and identify useful resources to support high quality medico-legal reports based on the Istanbul Protocol (the global standard for the effective investigation and documentation of torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment).
